We Are the Polytechnic University of Tomar

The Polytechnic of Tomar has been institutionally accredited by the Portuguese Higher Education Evaluation and Accreditation Agency (A3ES) for the maximum period of six years and without any conditions, achieving the highest level of recognition granted within the framework of the institutional evaluation of higher education institutions in Portugal. With this decision, the University meets the requirements established under the Legal Framework of Higher Education Institutions (RJIES) for its transformation into a Polytechnic University.

This institutional accreditation is the result of a rigorous evaluation process that assesses, among other aspects, governance, strategic management, the quality of academic programmes, faculty qualifications, research, innovation, internationalisation, and engagement with society. The process also includes site visits by external experts to verify the information submitted by the institution.

The effectiveness of the Polytechnic’s Integrated Quality Management System, certified in accordance with the ISO 9001 standard since 2025, was recognised in the A3ES decision. This accreditation confirms the quality, consistency and sustainability of the University’s institutional project and validates the development strategy pursued by the institution.

According to the President of the Polytechnic of Tomar, João Coroado, this decision represents “recognition of a path built on commitment, responsibility and quality.”

“Obtaining the highest level of accreditation is a moment of great satisfaction for the Polytechnic University of Tomar. It confirms the consistency of our institutional project and acknowledges the work carried out by the entire academic community over recent years.”

The accreditation further strengthens the position of the Polytechnic of Tomar as a leading institution within Portuguese higher education, recognised for the quality of its teaching, its applied research, and its close collaboration with businesses, organisations, and public institutions.

Following this decision and in accordance with the new Legal Framework of Higher Education Institutions, the institution will officially adopt the name Polytechnic University of Tomar, with effect from 1 August, marking the beginning of a new chapter in its history.
