Lecturer
- Alexandre José de Magalhães Figueiredo (1)(2)

(1) Lead Professor
(2) Teaching Professor

Prerequisites
NA

Objectives
Explore the technical and creative application of photographic emulsions sensitive to infrared radiation.

Experience the advantages of implementing the practice of developing photographic emulsions.

Control the variables in the production of a developing photographic emulsion in order to produce adequate contrast, density, and tonal reproduction for printing photographic proofs.

Explore the plastic potential of the photographic image support, with prints on paper, wood, textiles, glass, and metal.

Experience contact with industrial photographic emulsion that records a portion of the electromagnetic spectrum invisible to the human eye, stimulating practices of aesthetic and scientific value.

Promote critical thinking during the authorial practice, resulting from the elaboration of technical reports on laboratory experiments. Encourage autonomy in the execution of the requested practical exercises.

Program
Part 1 – Infrared Photographic Emulsion
Capture of photographic images in a field setting to evaluate the behavior and spectral sensitivity of this specialized photographic film.

Part 2 – Direct Darkening Photographic Emulsion
Production of digital matrices, preparation of solutions, and control of printing parameters. Silver nitrate reserve paper.

Part 3 – Handmade Photographic Emulsion
Production of handmade emulsion for application on glass, for capture in a large format camera, and positive printing on photographic paper.

Part 4 – Commercial Photographic Emulsion
Practical and creative applications on different substrates (textile, ceramic, glass, wood, and metal). Comparison test between commercial and handmade emulsion.

Part 5 – Written knowledge assessment test

Evaluation Methodology
Approval is conditional upon attendance in at least 2/3 of the contact hours. Failure to meet this requirement will result in failing the course unit, without prejudice to situations provided for by law.

Assessment by Attendance (continuous assessment):

Practical exercises (4) — 65%
Written test — 25%
Attendance/participation — 10%

To pass the course, the student must:

Submit all assessment components; Obtain a minimum grade of 8/20 points in each assessment component. Failure to obtain the minimum grade in any component will result in failure, and the student will not be eligible for subsequent assessment periods.

Passing is also conditional upon obtaining a minimum final grade of 9.5/20 points, resulting from the weighted average of the assessment components.

Assessment during entrance exam, resit, special, and final year periods:

Students who obtain a final grade of 8 points or higher in the attendance assessment may access subsequent assessment periods for the purpose of passing or improving their grade. In these cases, the assessment is carried out through an individual oral exam, focusing on all the theoretical content taught. The final grade for the course unit will be calculated as follows:

50% — grade in the attendance assessment
50% — grade in the oral exam
