Objectives
A- Understand the Portuguese language as a tool for accessing forms of representation of worldviews and perspectives on the world, by studying paradigmatic examples of coherent and cohesive linguistic representation;
B- Develop grammatical skills within the context of text and discourse, as well as forms of enunciative realisation;
C- Understand and interpret spoken and written texts, in accordance with theories of interpretation and discourse analysis;
D- Acquire techniques of oral and written expression: to master the concepts of space and time in the construction and delivery of discourse; to master the appropriate writing style for various contexts.
Program
1. Forms of Communication:
1.1. Non-verbal communication;
1.2. Verbal communication: written communication; spoken communication: interlocutive and monologic communication;
1.3. Noise in communication: internal and external barriers.
2. Spoken expression. Characteristics of the spoken mode. Spontaneous and prepared speech:
2.1. Theory of enunciation; modalisation of speech.
2.2. The appropriateness of registers and language varieties to different situations of verbal interaction;
2.3. Verbal interaction communicative competence; components of verbal interaction: participants and context;
2.4. Conversation analysis; linguistic realisation and social inequality; discourses of difference;
2.5. Interview techniques: types, preparation of the guiding text and approach.
3. Written expression: planning; text production; revision:
3.1. Constituent principles of the text: textuality cohesion, connection, coherence and the compositional heterogeneity of texts.
4. Strategies for enriching the lexicon appropriate to discourse production in different situations of written and oral communication:
4.1. Derivation/composition processes and irregular processes.
Evaluation Methodology
Continuous Assessment (to be eligible for continuous assessment, students must attend 70% of classes):
- Active participation in class, completion of exercises, worksheets or other set tasks: 10%
- Presentation of an assignment: 30%
- Written exam 60% (minimum pass mark of 8)
* Periodic Assessment (working students or students covered by other legal statuses):
- Written exam: 80% (minimum pass mark of 8)
- Presentation of an assignment: 20%
* Students who do not achieve a minimum mark of 9.5
in the items referred to as elements of continuous and periodic assessment, all of which are
compulsory, will be admitted to the examination.
Assessment by Examination (regular sitting, resit, special sitting) and Grade Improvement:
- Written examination 100%
* Assessment is carried out in accordance with the provisions of Article 11 of the Academic Regulations of the UPT Schools.
Students who achieve a mark of 10 or above in continuous assessment are exempt from the examination.
