5 ECTS; 3º Ano, 1º Semestre, 30,0 T + 30,0 TP , Cód. 814239.

Lecturer
- Cecília de Melo Correia Baptista (1)

(1) Docente Responsável
(2) Docente que lecciona

Prerequisites
N.A.

Objectives
A - Recognize the concepts of natural, accelerated degradation and bioremediation. Structurally distinguish the different groups of pollutants.
B - Study the different bioremediation methods and enable students to choose them according to the pollutants to be removed.

Program
Theoretical program
1. Introduction
1.1 Definitions and basic concepts
1.2 Mechanisms for transport and pollutants' natural degradation
1.3 Needs, limitations and advantages of bioremediation
2 - Different groups of pollutants and their toxicity
2.1 Main organic pollutants
2.2 Inorganic pollutants
2.3 Transformations and biogeochemical cycles
2.4 Toxicity associated with different groups of pollutants
3 - Microbial ecology and pollutants' metabolism
3.1 Factors influencing microbial metabolism
3.2 Metabolic pathways of microbial degradation (aerobic and anaerobic)
3.3 Monitoring of microbial growth in remediation processes
4 - Bioremediation processes in situ and ex situ
4.1 Forced and intrinsic bioremediation of aquifers.
4.2 Bioventing, agroremediation and composting of soils
4.3 Gas biofiltration processes
4.4 Phytoremediation
5 - Biodegradation of the most common groups of pollutants
5.1 Bioremediation of selected groups of organic compounds (HCs, CHCs, BTEX, PAHs, PCBs, CPs, among others)
5.2 Bioremediation of inorganic compounds

Practical program
TP1 - Preparation of yeast inoculum (batch growth curve)
TP2 - Production of biosurfactants using yeasts
TP3 - Determination of the emulsification index
TP4 - Soil decontamination - hydrocarbons removal

Evaluation Methodology
Final written test on all the subjects taught or thematic written project.
