Objectives
Understand the evolution of the western art paradigm throughout the Middle Ages and the Modern Era in relation with the socio-cultural changes. Characterize the artistic movements of this period. Students must demonstrate to interpret artworks as aesthetic, historical and artistic objects.

Program
I- The artistic development in the Modern Era
1-Origins of the Renaissance Plastic Space; the italian Proto-Renaissance
1.1 - The importance of perspective in the recovery of three dimensionality in painting and sculpture.
2-The italian Architecture and the importance of Treatises.
3 - The Renaissance Sculpture
3.1-From Ghiberti to Donatello and his followers.
3.2 - Andreas Verrocchios's realism
4 - The Rennaissance Painting
4.1 - Giotto's Proto-rennaissance: the recovery of the oil painting and the flemish realism
4.2 - The Flemish "Ars Nova"
4.3 - The fourteenth century italian painting
4.4 - Leonardo da Vinci, Rafael de Urbino e Miguel Ângelo
5 - The European Renaissance irradiation
6- The Mannerism
6.1-The new aesthetic and artistic concept. Anti-classicism.
6.2- "Prima-Maniera" and "Naturans Ars". Compositional inovations in Painting, Architecture and Sculpture.
6.3 - The "Contra-Maniera" and the new artistic literature.
6.3.1 - the Catholic Counter-reform and its impact in the art of the countries of the South Europe
6.3.2.- The importance of engraving in the diffusion of Manneirism principles
7 - The Antwerp Mannerism
8 - Diffusion of Mannerism in Europe
9 - The 17th century aesthetic paradigm: Barroc Art

Evaluation Methodology
Continuous assessment:two tests (miminum mark of 7.5/20 in one of the tests). Mimimum pass mark is 10/20.
Final examination for the students failing in the continuous assessment.
