Objectives
The aim of this syllabus is to teach the historical and cultural context of Western art, from ancient times to the present day and to provide the various interpretations of the artistic phenomenon across time with emphasis on image observation and interart analysis.

I -The Theory of Art as an introduction to Art History
1 - The artistic periodization
2 - The artistic historiography
3 - The status of the artwork and its evolution
4 - Artistic creation and aesthetic judgment
II -The Classical Antiquity: a world of gods and heroes Mythology and the artwork
1 -Aesthetic notions
2- Myth and legend in the artist's image
3 - Stylistic periodization and the aesthetic evolution
III - The Middle Ages: a world of symbols
1- The artistic periodization
2 - The Roman art and Gothic Art
IV - The Modern Age: the importance of the human beeing
1- The Renaissance as a theory of Western artistic image
V - The Contemporary Age: a world of individuals. The Contemporary Age as a pictures society.
1 - The birth of Art Criticism
2 - Modern Art for a Modern World
3 - The art and the artist in the nineteenth century.
4 - The art in the twentieth century
4.1- The ( de) construction of the concepts of art and beauty
4.2 - From Post- modern to multicultural art

Evaluation Methodology
Continuous Assessment: Minimum attendance of 2/3 of classes is required; 2 written tests.minimum mark of 7,5/20 in each component with passing mark of 10/20.

Final examination: approved with 10

Teaching Method
Lectures focused on the analysis of works of art and texts, to understand its artistic and cultural background.we intend to promote the reflection of the students and the construtive discussions on the syllabus contents.
