8 ECTS; 1º Ano, 2º Semestre, 75,0 PL + 15,0 TP

Lecturer
- Fernando dos Santos Antunes
- Ana Paula Gerardo Machado

Prerequisites
Not applicable

Objectives
O1 - Acquisition of skills in the field of standardization and tests for the determination of physical and mechanical properties.
O2 - Acquisition of skills that allow the processing, analysis of data and the preparation of reports and, where applicable, the classification of materials.

Program
1 - General concepts about technical standardization systems
2 - Reading and interpretation of standards
3 – Reporting.
4 - Rules for the operation and management of laboratories
5 – Preparation and carrying out of tests on different organic materials – wood, paper/cardboard, polymers, composites.
5.1 - Tree growth, structure and organization. Structure and composition of wood. Histology of woods
5.2 - Cells of softwoods and hardwoods and their functions in trees. Ultrastructure of plant fibers.
5.3 – Technological aspects of wood working and preparation. Physical-mechanical characteristics. Identification and classification. Natural and working defects and deformations. Changes and deterioration of wood.
5.4 – Structure and properties of paper and cardboard. Structural, physical-mechanical and optical resistance properties. Packing of samples and preparation of specimens for analysis.
5.5 - Structure, composition and properties of polymers and composites
6 - Preparation and carrying out of tests on different inorganic materials – stone, soil, ceramics, binders, concrete, bituminous, metals.
6.1 – Structure and composition.
6.2 – Physical and mechanical properties.
6.3 – Identification and classification.
Practical program:
TP1 – Identification, cuts and preparation of wood samples.
TP2 – Macroscopic observation and microscopic observation of histological sections of different woods.
TP3 – Dissociation of wood fibers and microscopic observation of fibers.
TP4 – Physical-mechanical tests on paper and cardboard.
TP5 – Tests on concrete.
TP6 – Tests on aggregates.
TP7 – Soil tests.

Evaluation Methodology
1 – The evaluation is continuous. The evaluation of the contents transmitted by each of the professors, at any time, takes into account the classifications obtained in the following two evaluation elements:
a) Preparation of a set of mandatory practical assignments and respective reports, under the guidance of the teacher (weight: 70%). The evaluation of each work will be carried out only once during the semester (contact period).
b) Written test, which focuses on the contents transmitted by the teacher (weight: 30%). The 3 written tests (one for each teacher) are the assessment element that is repeated in the different assessment periods. Only students who have completed the assessment component referred to in paragraph a) are admitted to the written tests.
2 - The final classification of the UC, in each evaluation period, is calculated through a weighted average of the 3 classifications (one for each teacher) determined by the methodology referred to in point 1. The weights for the average are the percentages of hours taught by each teacher, that is, 70%, 20% and 10%. The student will pass the UC when the final classification is equal to or greater than 10 values.
