(1) Docente Responsável
(2) Docente que lecciona

Prerequisites
Basic skills on chemical processes design (Mass-energy balances).

Objectives
Students should acquire skills on analysis, design and mass and energy integration of chemical processes and should be able to use computational methods for chemical simulation.

Program
1.Introduction: Chemical process industries generic structure; Process diagrams; Mass and energy balances; Equipment sizing; Preliminary economic evaluation; Process simulation principles and use of computacional methods;
2.Chemical processes design principles: Concept of chemical process design problem - Relationship with new chemical process design activities; Process design steps;
3.Selection and configuration of reactive systems: Chemical reactors performance and operational conditions; Reactional systems configuration;
4.Design of separation processes: heterogenous mixtures separation; homogenous mixtures separation;
5.Prediction of properties and operating conditions: prevision of physical, thermo-physical and thermo-chemical properties; Operational operations heuristics; 6.Analysis and design of energy networks: Heat transfer equipment and heat exchange networks design; integration of heat transfer equipments;
7.Mass integration networks and green chemistry.
Team assignement work: Simulation of a chemical process.

Evaluation Methodology
A written test (50% of final grade) and practical component (50% of final grade). The practical part include a group assignment work (50%).

Teaching Method
Lectures supported by demonstrations and resolution of practical cases. Theoretical and practical sessions focused on the simulation of chemical processes by computational means.

Software used in class
In theoretical-practical there are used chemical processes integration and simulation applications (e.g. DWSIM and HINT software), and developed spreadsheets (Excel).
