Objectives
At the end of this curricular unit, students should be able to:
a) identify and understand conceptually the main theories of cinema;
b) establish and reflexively criticizes the relationship between the theory and practice of cinema;
c) know the evolution of aesthetic and technological paradigms.
Program
1. Film theory(ies).
2. First theoretical approaches: Hugo Münsterberg, Bela Balazs and Rudolf Arnheim.
3. Soviet theorists: Dziga Vertov and Serguei Eisenstein.
4. Phenomenology of Realism: Andre Bazin, Sigfried Kracauer, Guido Aristarco and Slavoj Zizek.
5. Modern Cinema: András Kovács and Gilles Deleuze.
6. Other Cinemas: Frantz Fanon, Glauber Rocha, Laura Mulvey and Fernando Solanas.
7. Digital Cinema and convergence culture:Lev Manovich, Tom Gunning and Henry Jenkins.
8. Cinephilia and film culture: Antoine De Baecque and Thomas Elsaesser.
Evaluation Methodology
1. Attendance and participation: 4/20
2. Written pieces of assessment:
1 midterm comprehensive test: 10/20;
2 tests: 2+2/20;
3. Written assignment:
1 written assignment worth up to 2/20.
