Objectives
Upon completion of this module students should
1. have acquired knowledge of the history of book and publishing;
2. be able to recognise the different phases of the history of book and publishing.

Program
1. The pre-historic paintings and engravings;
2. The first written:
2.1. The Egyptian and cuneiform writings;
3. The phonetic writings:
3.1. Writing Phonetics: the Phoenicians to latinos;
4. The alphabet in Western Europe;
5. The medieval manuscripts:
5.1. The medieval manuscripts and the writings and uncial semi-uncial;
5.2. The medieval manuscripts and the tiny writing carolina;
5.3. The Book of Kells;
6. The invention of the printing press and your diffusion;
7. The golden period of the French book (21st century. XVI);
8. The printed book in the 17th, 18th, 19th, and 20th:
8.1. The printed book in the 17th century;
8.2. The printed book in the 18th century (Baskerville and your followers);
8.3. The printed book in the 19th century (William Morris and his successors);
8.4. The book in the twentieth century (modern typography).

Evaluation Methodology
180. Final classification will be based upon the following weighting:
Written test 40%; Research assignment 50%+oral presentations (10%)
Assignment will consist of a small research on a topic related to one of the subjects addressed in class plus three short oral presentations (contributing 50% weighting of the final mark ) to be completed within previously established deadlines.
