Prerequisites
Not applicable.

Objectives
Manage and operate physical, chemical and biological treatment systems for wastewater treatment plants.
Use specification sheets and manuals for the various treatment organs.
Perform measurements of process variables.
Calculate treatment efficiencies.
Diagnose critical operating situations and propose action measures.
Management of the final destination of the sludge.
Prepare technical operational reports.

Program
I. Introduction to treatment units. Characteristics of a liquid effluent. Pollutant characteristics. Levels of liquid effluent treatment. Global operation of a WWTP.
II. Physical treatment of liquid effluents. Principles and applications of the screening, sifting, sanding, oil and grease removal, flotation, flocculation, sedimentation, decantation and filtration processes.
III. Chemical wastewater treatment processes. Principles and applications of adsorption, ion exchange, disinfection, oxidation, precipitation and membrane processes
IV. Biological wastewater treatment processes. Aerobic processes, activated sludge systems and variants, aerated lagoons, photosynthetic lagoons, percolation filters and discs
biological. Anoxic processes in suspension and in fixed film. Anaerobic processes, anaerobic digesters and anaerobic filters. Natural treatments. Soil and built wetland treatments.
V. Sludge treatment and final destination. Thickening, stabilization, conditioning, dehydration, drying, composting and deposition operations.

Evaluation Methodology
Continuous assessment: Theoretical tests. The evaluation of chapters I, II and half of chapter III will be carried out through two written tests with a total quotation of 10 values.
The evaluation of the remaining half of chapter III and chapters IV and V, will be carried out through a written test with a total quotation of 10 values. Students are exempted from examination if the sum of the two quotations exceeds or equals 10 values and has a minimum of 5 values in each of them.

Exam assessment: During exam or appeal periods, students will be able to take only one written test that weighs the same as the continuous assessment.

Teaching Method
In theoretical classes, students learn about the different types of effluent treatment, putting into practice the fundamental knowledge through the resolution of exercises and equipment design.
