Objectives
In the course of the semester we study photographic processes that use bromide or silver chloride emulsion in black and white. Both direct darkening emulsions and developing emulsions for application on paper or photographic film are addressed. From a historical perspective, we will study the discovery and evolution of emulsions, as well as the improvements in the first 10 years of use. Reference will be made to the production processes of an emulsion, both industrially and on a small scale, in a photographic laboratory. We will study in detail how the choice of chemicals, the different production technologies and the variation of parameters can influence the characteristics of the manufactured emulsion. The program also includes the study of the theories of imaging and revelation, which made it possible to understand these phenomena. Special effects on emulsions and infrared emulsions will also be addressed from a practical perspective. Practical exercises will be performed with commercially produced emulsion and with various emulsions produced entirely by the students, in school, from the rudimentary materials and equipment. Infrared emulsions will also be tried.
Program
Experience with industrial photographic emulsion.
Experiment with infrared sensitive photographic film.
Preparation and test of direct browning emulsion.
Preparation and testing of emulsion washed for development.
Practice of printing on various supports (wood, textiles, paper, etc.), with the "artisanal" development emulsion produced in the context of a theoretical-practical class or using commercial emulsion.
Practice of producing a glass negative with the "artisanal" developing emulsion produced in the context of a theoretical-practical class or using commercial emulsion).
Last practical classes - Final project of curricular unit.
Evaluation Methodology
The assessment is continuous and consists of:
Online attendance, participation and assiduity - 15%
1 written assessment test - 30%
1 research paper - 15%
Final project - 40%
All assessment elements must be presented and delivered by the last class of the contact period.
The final project needs to be presented online in the last day of normal season.
Students who do not obtain a final grade equal to or higher than 8/20 are excluded from subsequent seasons.
