Objectives
a) Understand contemporary global cinema.
b) Analyze and problematize cinematographic discourses in clear articulation with contemporary socio-political moments.
c) Identify the aesthetic perimeter associated with cinematographic genres, removing from this exercise its potentials and limitations.

Program
1. Contemporary cinema in Latin America:
1.1. New wave of Mexican cinema and Cuban cinema.
1.2. New post-cinema Brazilian cinema.
1.3. New Argentine cinema.

2. Contemporary African and Middle Eastern cinema:
2.1. Traditions of African cinema.
2.2. New Turkish cinema (alternative: Palestinian cinema; Israeli cinema; Egyptian cinema).
2.3. New Iranian cinema.

3. Contemporary East and South Asian cinema:
3.1. Cinemas in China and South Korea.
3.2. Indian cinema between tradition and contemporaneity.

4. Contemporary European cinema:
4.1. Tragedy and contemporaneity in Portuguese cinema.
4.2. Violence and power in Austrian cinema.
4.3. Memory of the Holocaust in German cinema.

5. Scandinavian contemporary cinema:
5.1. Danish cinema (alternative: Norwegian cinema; Swedish cinema).

Evaluation Methodology
1. Continuous assessment:
1.1. Written film analysis (50%)
1.2. Written reviews about the program’s films (50%)

2. Exam – First attempt and Resit:
Written test covering all taught content (100%)
