Objectives
Develop skills for critical analysis and self-learning. Promote the analysis of the factors that increase the environmental impact in the Construction sector. Emphasize the importance of sustainable building systems, materials and processes in project design, contract execution, maintenance and demolition of buildings.

Program
1. Introduction. 1.1 Planet Earth and its natural resources (material and energy). 1.2 Basic concepts of Ecology; 1.3 The environment modified by human action. 1.4 Historical background on the development of "environmental awareness"; 1.4.1 Industrial revolutions and their social and environmental effects; 1.4.2. The UN / 72 conference; 1.4.3 The Montreal Protocol; 1.4.4 The Rio 92 Summit; 1.4.5 The Kyoto Protocol; 1.4.6 The summits of the 21st century; 1.4.7 Agenda XXI.
2. Sustainable development. 2.1 The Bruntland report; 2.2 Conceptualization of sustainable development and bio-capacity; 2.3 Indicators of sustainable development.
3. Sustainable Construction Industry. 3.1 Characterization of the construction industry in terms of environmental performance; 3.2 Sustainability indicators in the construction industry; 3.2.1 Embodied energy (PEC, EIM, Emergy); 3.2.2 Ecological impact; 3.2.3 Reuse and recycling potential; 3.2.4 Toxicity; 3.2.5 Costs and market value; 3.3 Integration and interconnection of the principles of sustainable construction; 3.3.1 Efficient selection of materials; 3.3.2 Energy efficiency; 3.3.3 Water efficiency; 3.3.4 Natural lighting and ventilation; 3.4 Main methods to assess sustainability of buildings; 3.5 Sustainable buildings: passive house, green building and nZEB.
4. Environmental management. 4.1 Building materials and products; 4.1.1 Life Cycle Analysis. 4.1.2 ISO standardization - 14000 series. 4.1.3 Eco-labels: Der Blaue Engel, EcoLogo, Nordic Ecolabel and FSC 4.2 EU framework for efficient management of energy and water resources. 4.3 RCDs legislative framework. 4.4 Institutional tools for the evaluation of sustainable projects (EIA and EIA). 4.5 Environmental noise and its regulatory framework.
5. Technology and innovation in the development of Sustainable Construction; 5.1. Redefinition of vernacular building materials and systems; 5.1.1 Vegetable fibers;5.1.2 Wood; 5.1.3 Cork; 5.2 Manufacturing through products based on industrial waste; 5.2.1 Waste from cork industry; 5.4.2 Waste from agro-industries; 5.3 Recycled materials and products; 5.4 The integration of the concept of sustainability in the life cycle of a building; 5.4.1 IT in the various phases of a building; 5.4.1.1 Building Information Modeling (BIM); 5.4.1.2 Robotic technology; 5.4.1.3 3D printing; 5.4.2 nZEB and smart cities; 5.5 Nanotechnology in Construction industry.

Evaluation Methodology
Continuous assessment: Written assignment (50%:during lecture period, each 12,5%) + Final assignment (50%).
Exam: Closed book test (50%) + Written assignment (50%).
