Students should develop skills to understand the complexity of the environmental interactions resulting from the presence of xenobiotics in the environment, identify environmental risks and get familiar with the ecotoxicological tests.
1-Toxicology and ecotoxicology: Concepts associated with toxicology; Environmental toxicology; Ecotoxicology; Development of the concept of ecotoxicology; The essence of ecotoxicology; Retrospective Ecotoxicology; Prospective Ecotoxicology; Historical need for ecotoxicology.
2-Contaminants: Sources of ecotoxicants; Properties of ecotoxicants; Principal classes of contaminants; Generic effects of a toxicant on ecosystems.
3-Pollutant distribution and modeling: Transport in water; Air transport; Models for the environmental distribution of chemicals.
4-The fate of radioactive metals and isotopes in contaminated ecosystems: Terrestrial ecosystems, Aquatic systems.
5-The fate of organic pollutants in individuals and ecosystems: The general model; Absorption process; Distribution process; Storage; Metabolism; Sites of excretion; Toxicokinetic models.
6-Toxicity tests: The dose-response curve; Standard Methods; Classification of toxicity tests; Design parameters of toxicological tests for individual species; Statistical methods for evaluation of toxicity tests for individual species; Control charts Of Quality.
Assessment includes 3 tests and 1 laboratory report. A mimimum mark of 10/20 exempts students from taking the exam.
