Objectives
A. The students should develop an insight of film history and be able to relate it with other film areas and cultural areas in general, understand the milestones of film history.
B. Develop the ability to analyse motion pictures and be able to relate works and film-making trends.

Program
I. The invention of Cinema. Crossing of technologies and traditions of show of the century. XVI to the century XIX. The image and the movement: problematic of the analysis and the synthesis of the movement (from Muybridge and Marey to Edison and Lumière). Cinema in the "Lumière phase": questions of subject, space and time.
II. The cinema of the first years, between the catalog Lumière and the First World War. Rupture of the single plane and successive ruptures until the beginning of the classic standardization. Articulation between narratives and language. Modern interpretations of pre-classical cinema.
III. The cinema and the vanguards. Cinema in the art scene at the time of the vanguards, from the end of the first decade of the century to the end of the twenties. Specific analysis of the German, Soviet, and French.
IV. The American classical cinema. Evolution of production structures up to the 1920s. Standardization strands: studios, genders and star-system. Basic conventions of classical cinema, at the level of narrative models, space treatment and treatment of time. Study of a genre: film noir.
V. The Italian realist school.
VI. The emergence of the Nouvelle Vague: cinephilia, authors' politics and relaunching cinema as a resolutely modern art.

Evaluation Methodology
1 critical review (30% of the final overall mark).
1 test (70% of final overall mark).
