Objectives
1. The students will acquire knowledge of the history of book and publishin;
2. They should recognise the different phases of the history of book and publishing.

Program
1. The Egyptian and cuneiform writing;
2. The phonetic writing: from the Phoenicians to the Latins;
3. The alphabet in Western Europe;
4. The medieval manuscripts and uncial, semi-uncial;
5. Medieval manuscripts and the minuscule Carolingian writing;
6. The invention of printing and its dissemination;
7. The golden age of French book;
8. The printed book in the seventeenth century;
9. The printed book in the eighteenth century (Baskerville and his followers);
10. The printed book in the nineteenth century (William Morris and his successors);
11. The book in the twentieth century (the modern typography).

Evaluation Methodology
Assessment: A 12-page essay (written research work on a scientific magazine or book of the student's choice) including oral presentation. Oral presentations: 50% and written essay: 50%.
