Objectives
At the end of the course students should be familiar with the various types of bioenergy, their production processes, their applications, their contribution to sustainable development, its advantages and disadvantages, its importance in the development of the country and Europe.

Program
1.Introduction to bioenergy.
The bioenergy concept. Photosynthesis and the carbon cycle. Biomass: types, sources, characteristics, derived products. Available technologies for the production of bioenergy. European energy strategy. Situation in Portugal and applicable law. Advantages and disadvantages.

2.Description of the production processes of liquid biofuels.
Biodiesel. Bioethanol. Other liquid biofuels.

3.Description of the production processes of gaseous biofuels.
Biogas. Biohydrogen. Other gaseous biofuels.

4.The use of biofuels in cogeneration.
Heat production. Production of steam. Combined heat and power.

5.Other types of bioenergy.
Bioelectricity.

6.Other types of renewable energy.
Solar energy. Wind energy. Hydropower. Geothermal energy. Wave energy. Hydrogen.

7.Comparison with fossil energy sources.
Coal. Oil. Natural gas. Nuclear.

Evaluation Methodology
Written test, in frequency or in exam periods.
Realization of the practical works and respective reports.
Presentation of an assignment on a topic of choice.
Final grade: 65% theoretical classification + 35% practical classification.

Teaching Method
Theoretical classes consisting of presentation and illustration of the fundamental principles. Practical classes with resolution of application exercises and laboratory coursework.
