Objectives
An overview of the history of C&R:the 19th century and Viollet-le- Duc and John Ruskin;the modern theories of Camilo Boito, Giovannoni and Césare Brandi; Recent contemporary authors. Students should be sensitised to ethical principles and be able to make right C&R decisions.

Program
1.Summary of the theories on restoration of works of art, 2.The 19th century and early theories and intervention criteria - The stylistic restoration by Viollet-le-Duc.; John Ruskin and the anti-restoration movement. 3.Modern theories and criteria: Camilo Boito and Gustavo Giovannoni, 4.Brandi and the Critical Restoration, 5.The evolution in Portugal;from the 19th century to the present day.

Evaluation Methodology
Continuous assessment - participation in class and written mid-term test.
Final assessment - written examination
