The Tomar City Council (CMT), the Portuguese Army and the Polytechnic of Tomar (IPT) formalised, on Monday, 27 July, a cooperation agreement establishing a strategic partnership for the preservation, study, enhancement and dissemination of the documentary and photographic heritage of the 15th Infantry Regiment (RI15), a collection of significant historical, cultural and scientific value for Tomar and for Portuguese military history.
The ceremony began with the screening of a commemorative film marking the 220th anniversary of the 15th Infantry Regiment, followed by a historical presentation delivered by Patrícia Romão. The presentation highlighted the work carried out by the Tomar Centre for Photographic Studies (CEFT) in preserving and promoting photographic heritage, including the display of a restored document and an explanation of the various stages involved in curating an exhibition, illustrated with images from CEFT’s most recent exhibitions.
The agreement was signed by the Chief of the Army General Staff, General Eduardo Manuel Braga da Cruz Mendes Ferrão, the Mayor of Tomar, Tiago Carrão, and the President of the Polytechnic of Tomar, João Paulo Coroado.
Through this partnership, the three institutions commit to developing an integrated project encompassing the inventorying, conservation, restoration, digitisation, research and dissemination of the RI15 documentary and photographic heritage. The initiative also includes the creation of a digital platform to provide public access to the collection and the development of a future Interpretation Centre on the Military Presence in Tomar, further strengthening the municipality’s position as a leading destination for historical heritage, cultural tourism and military tourism.
The agreement also provides for the development of joint initiatives in research, exhibition programming, cultural mediation and training, fostering closer links between military heritage, academia and the wider community, while creating new opportunities for the cultural and tourism development of the municipality.
Scientific, technical and cultural activities related to this project may be carried out within the framework of the Tomar Centre for Photographic Studies (CEFT), a partnership structure jointly established by the CMT and the Polytechnic of Tomar.
