General information
The Polytechnic University of Tomar is a higher education in the European area of higher education, provided of skills in the areas of science, technology, arts and humanities, from the outset, compete complementarily for higher education of their students, producing useful knowledge, skills, competencies and skills, preparing them for the labor market and for the exercise of active citizenship in a democratic society.
The Polytechnic University of Tomar still takes as its mission: expanding access to knowledge for the benefit of individuals and society through research, education and cooperation in a project for a global training of the individual; active participation in building an European area of research and education, and a model of regional development based in the creation, innovation and enhancement of scientific and technological knowledge.

Snack bar and Canteen
The Food Unit on the IPT Campus is located next to the Halls of Residence and houses a cafeteria, a standard snack-bar on the first floor and a low-cost canteen on the ground floor. This canteen is designed to serve the IPT students and requires the use of meal tickets which can be bought at the IPT Social Vending Machine until the day before. A complete meal (soup, main course, bread, drink and dessert) at the canteen costs €3.03 and students can choose between a fish, meat or diet dish. This service is available at lunch and dinner times.

Facilities for special need students
International students with special needs should contact the internatinal relations office through gri@ipt.pt, or the WPOC, World Point Of Contact, through mentor@wpoc.ipt.pt which promotes student autonomy and integration within the academic community.
Insurance
Students from participating countries within the Erasmus Mundus Scholarship programme are covered by the Europe Erasmus Mundus Insurance Scheme. The insurance is processed within the administrative procedures after the selection of students. Students from countries outside the Erasmus scheme should be informed before their departure if their countries have any special agreement with Portugal, covering these issues. If there is no special agreement in this area, students should organise their own insurance and apply for the regular school insurance at IPT, that covers all the possible accidents that occur at the IPT's facilities, away from the campus (during formally organized curricular activities), whilst travelling to and from IPT, and at the official residence. The school insurance requires the payment of approximately 5 euros.
Students from European Union and the EEA countries are covered by the Erasmus Health Insurance card. To have this insurance protetion, students should contact their own social security office and ask for the card, before their departure.
Social Services
The Social Services department of the Polytechnic University of Tomar (SAS – IPT) is an office at the University which is independent, in administrative, financial and patrimonial terms. This service ensures that no student’s studies are impeded at the University because of financial difficulties. Its mission is, therefore, to manage and award scholarships and other grants for students in need, to manage and provide low-cost food in canteens and bars, to provide accommodation in Halls of Residence and to manage sports facilities.
Note: For those outgoing students who have social and economical difficulties the Portuguese Government may offer an Extra Erasmus Grant in order to guarantee that all students have access to the Erasmus Programme. For more information contact IRO gri@ipt.pt

IPT Student Unions
Located on the first floor of Building B (room 252), the Student Union represents all IPT students and has a major role in promoting and carrying out academic activities involving students, as well as defending the rights of all students before the Polytechnics’ authorities. Photocopy services, bibliographic support and stationary material are currently being managed by the Student’s Union of the Polytechnic, although they are specific attributions of the social services.

Sports
Besides the sports facilities in the IPT Campus, the city also offers several places to do such as modern stadium and a multi-function pavilion, a new sports complex with excellent conditions for the practice of swimming and water gymnastics, tennis, squash, gymnastics, yoga and dancing.
