International Symposium PAPER TRAILS: Post-industrial histories, technical memories and art practices in Tomar

The international symposium PAPER TRAILS: Post-industrial histories, technical memories and art practices in Tomar, promoted jointly by the Centre for Technology, Restoration and Art Enhancement(TECHN&ART) and the École de Design et Haute École d'Art du Valais (EDHEA) will take place between 25 and 27 May at the Auditorium Doutor José Bayolo Pacheco de Amorim of the IPT and at the Levada de Tomar Cultural Complex.

This activity held as part of the international project with the same name aims to:

- provide an overview of the state of Tomar's industrial heritage with a view to its understanding and analysis;

- evaluate the impact and feasibility of adopting a strategy of artistic reconversion of old industrial sites, either in transdisciplinary or geographic terms

- contribute to "landscape management in a context of sustainability" and "promote positive change" as set out in the UNESCO Chair for the Humanities and Integrated Management of Cultural Landscapes; and

- comply with the objective - Sustainable Cities and Communities - of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

With the paper and paper industry as central themes, the Symposium will feature a range of eclectic approaches resulting from the reconciliation of academic, artistic and journalistic perspectives. To this end, names such as Guilherme d'Oliveira Martins, Jorge Custódio, the Chilean collective Mesa8 in the person of Leslie Fernández, Manuel Portela, Cecília Baptista, Manuel Rosa, Federica Martini and, as a special guest, Carlos Vaz Marques, will be gathering in Tomar on the dates already mentioned.

A focus will also be placed on documentary cinema through the screening of the films Invisible Factories (2017) by Robert Ireland, Petra Köhle, Aurélie Strumans and Nicolas Vermot-Petit-Outhenin and Marca d'água (2022) by João Luz, the latter conceived in the context of the PAPER TRAILS project and focused on the disintegration of the paper industry in Tomar.

For health reasons related to COVID-19 the capacity is limited, so registration is mandatory and, for logistical reasons, the deadline for this is May 20th.

Instructions for registration as well as the full programme can be found on the link:http://www.papertrails.techneart.ipt.pt/pt/simposio/
