In December 2017, the General Assembly of the United Nations declared 2019 as the International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements (IYPT2019). The United Nations recognise the importance of global awareness of Chemistry as promoting sustainable development and as providing solutions for global challenges in energy, education, agriculture and health.

This international year will bring together various partners including UNESCO and scientific, educational and other societies to promote and celebrate the importance of the periodic table and its social applications.

The Instituto Politécnico de Tomar through its school of technology (ESTT), with a history of over 30 years of training in chemical technology related areas, joins the IYPT2019 initiatives nationally coordinated and supported by the Portuguese Society of Chemistry (SPQ), namely: Chemical Challenges 2019 (DESQ2019), with a 10-week duration starting in January 29th - the official date of celebrations - which also included the initiative Human Periodic Table; Carbon Day, which took place on March 21st, and other events that will take place until the end of the year.

As part of the celebrations, the annual Chemical Technology Seminar - 150 years of the Periodic Table will be held next Wednesday May 8th in the Dr. Júlio das Neves Lecture Hall (Room O106). It will have the contribution of the SPQ and renowned local companies.
