LIED.IPT - 1 ano em Revista

1 year of LIED in Review

The year 2020 has brought us many challenges! The academic community has seen its reality radically changed overnight. In this context, the Laboratory of Pedagogical Innovation and E-Learning (LIED) of the Instituto Politécnico de Tomar has developed a range of activities to help teachers and students and has worked on various cooperation and research projects. We recall some of the activities that have taken place in recent months.

LIED had the privilege of participating in the Portuguese version of the book: “Manual de Apoio à Aprendizagem Flexível durante a Interrupção do Ensino Regular - A Experiência Chinesa na Manutenção da Aprendizagem durante o Surto de COVID-19”. This version was produced with the support of UNESCO in a collective and voluntary collaborative action of a group of Portuguese academic and business people during the National Emergency State.

We know that from March 2020 the daily life of classrooms has changed radically, so between 9 April and 25 June, on a continuous and weekly basis, the LIED team held 12 Webinars to support the IPT community, with a view to assisting teachers in remote teaching and that in 2021 they continue with planned activity.

A series of tutorials addressing several important issues in distance education was also produced and made available in the institutional SharePoint. As a follow-up to this work, and because support and cooperation are part of the values of this team, a YouTube channel and a Facebook page were created in order to reach a wider community.

Teacher training is another primary objective. To this end, we organised the 1st edition of the Pedagogical Innovation Course held from 1 to 22 July 2020 which included several modules: educational technology, communication tools, content creation, learning and assessment activities. Given the success of this first edition, a 2nd edition will take place in February 2021, with registrations already closed.

The development of R&D Projects is one of the strategic priorities of LIED. In this sense, the laboratory has been working on a number of national and international projects, including: "FUSE IT" - international project for the development of competences in education, financed by the Erasmus+ programme; "Project for the Training of Teachers and other Education and Training Stakeholders", financed by POCH for teacher training in co-promotion projects, which started in January 2021 and aims to develop competences with the Finnish method Demola; and also the LinkMeUp Project - 1000 ideas, financed by COMPETE. It is also worth mentioning the recent acceptance of the project "Empower Girls Creativity Through the Use of Digital Technologies" by ERASMUS+, which is scheduled to start in May. All these projects were approved with distinction, involving applications that were prepared over several months by the members of LIED, with the support of the Financial and Property Division, the International Relations Office (GRI) and the R&D&I Support Office.

Scientific activity has been a priority since the creation of the LIED. Right after its foundation, one of the first activities was the participation in the VIII Meeting of eLearning Institutions and Units in Higher Education, which took place in the University of Algarve, with the presentation of a scientific paper that resulted in the election of the best poster of the event, with the title "Pedagogical Innovation and Distance Education in IPT". In the same event, the LIED director was a guest speaker with the presentation "Perspectives for the future of eLearning Resources and Technologies". LIED also participated in the International Symposium on Computers in Education (Malaga, Spain), with the presentation "Detection of plagiarism in algorithms - a case study using Algorithmi". More recently, LIED participated in the conference "Digital Transformation and Information Technologies in Pandemic Times" with a paper entitled "Innovating in Pandemic Times" presented in December and published in the scientific journal UiIPS..

Creating partnerships and networks is a basic goal. To this end, a partnership was created with the Teacher Training Centre "Os Templários" to provide training accredited by the Scientific-Pedagogical Council for Continuous Training to primary and secondary school teachers. In the 2020 school year, four training sessions about Office 365 from a user perspective were held. At least two more training sessions in educational scenarios with apps, games and mobile devices are also planned for 2021.

LIED also participated in the integration of IPT in the collaborative network of Portuguese Higher Education Institutions to foster digital transformation. Célio Gonçalo Marques, LIED.IPT Director, is one of the representatives of the Instituto Politécnico de Tomar at Metared Portugal, being part of the Educational Technologies Working Group. LIED is also represented in the Portuguese Society of Educational Sciences, specifically in the Quality and Innovation Working Group of the E-Learning Section (SEAD).

2020 was a remarkable year for the Pedagogical Innovation and E-Learning Laboratory but very intense due to the pandemic situation we are going through. We will continue to be committed to raising the quality of education and fostering digital transformation.
