Publication in the Diário da República: Despacho n.º 7795/2021 - 09/08/2021

6 ECTS; 2º Ano, 1º Semestre, 28,0 T + 14,0 PL + 28,0 TP , Cód. 911247.

Lecturer
- Paulo Manuel Machado Coelho (1)(2)

(1) Docente Responsável
(2) Docente que lecciona

Prerequisites
Not applicable.

Objectives
The students will familiarise themselves with the theory of systems and signals with emphasis on continuous linear and time invariant systems. Analyze signals and systems in the time and frequency domain using the Laplace and Fourier transform, respectively. They should be able to work with MATLAB - a software for the analysis and simulation of signals systems.

Program
1 - Introduction: Signals and systems classification.
2 - Qualitative analysis of LTI systems: time constant and rise; bandwidth and cutoff frequency; resonance.Analysis of continuous LIT systems in time domain.
3 - Qualitative analysis of LTI systems: time constant and rise time; bandwidth and cutoff frequency; resonance.
4 - Analysis of LIT systems in frequency domain: Laplace transforms; Fourier Series; Fourier Transform; Energy and Power; Parseval's relatin; transfer function; stability; The decibel; Bode Diagram; transient response and steady state response, frequency response of 1st and 2nd order systems.
5 - Block diagram representation: construction, simplification and analysis.
6 - Transient and steady state analysis of higher-order systems.
7 - Analog filters: low-pass filters, band-pass and high-pass; filter characteristics; analysis of passive filters, seen as of 1st and 2nd order systems.
8 - Mathematical modelling of systems: electrical systems. Liquid systems.
9 - Basic Systems Identification: examples.

Evaluation Methodology
Written closed-book examination in the regular assessment periods ( 75%); and Practical assignments (25%).
The student must obtain a mark higher or equal to 8 out of 20 in the exam and 9.5 out of 20 in the practical work. The average of the two must be greater than or equal to 9.5 out of 20.
