Objectives
The course will allow the student to develop the following competencies:
A.) Distinguish the different types of research (quantitative, qualitative and mix) applicable to Documentary Cinema and overall Visual Arts;
B.) Systematize and draft the research question, the corresponding hypothesis, as well as to operationalize scientific terminology and to validate research drafts;
C.) Explain and make use of the knowledge from five fundamental theories applicable to Communication and the Visual Arts;
D.) Develop skills in the area of scientific writing by understanding the specific features and particular characteristics of this writing mode

2. Research design to the Communication and Visual Arts
2.1 The construction of the Research Question
2.2. The importance of the Hypothesis

2.4. Validation and verification models to measure the strength of the project

3. Meta-methodological theories applicable to Documentary Cinema
3.1. Representation Theory
3.2. Visual Literacy Theory
3.3. Visual Rhetoric Theory
3.4. Visual Semiotic Theory
3.5. Cultural Studies Theory

4. Introduction to scientific writing
4.1. The writing process in the academic and scientific arenas
4.2. Writing as a knowledge mediation mechanism
4.3. The specific formal and semantic features of scientific writing

Evaluation Methodology
The course evaluation system makes use of assignments made in class (25%); active class participation (15%); drafting of a research project (40%); presentation of the draft proposal (20%)

Teaching Method
Classes will mostly use the expository method. Whenever the instructor deems necessary there will be usage of audiovisual content that will ease the comprehension of the themes proposed in this syllabus.
